Bitcoin Historical Data Analysis
Analyzing Bitcoin's Journey: Price and Volume Trends (2012-2021)
This Power BI dashboard offers a detailed historical analysis of Bitcoin's performance from 2012 to early 2021. It provides insights into total trading volumes (both in USD and BTC), the number of trades, and significant price fluctuations including the lowest, highest, and weighted average prices. The dashboard aims to visualize Bitcoin's growth, volatility, and trading activity over time.
Project Overview & Analytical Goals
The primary objective of this project was to explore Bitcoin's historical data to uncover key trends and patterns for cryptocurrency enthusiasts and market analysts. I focused on addressing questions such as:
- What are the overall trading volumes and number of trades for Bitcoin over the analyzed period?
- How has Bitcoin's price trended annually, from its lowest points to its highest peaks?
- Are there specific years or quarters where trading volume saw significant increases or decreases?
- What were the lowest and highest prices Bitcoin reached each year?
- How does total trading volume distribute across different quarters?
Data Source
The dataset used for this analysis comprises historical price and volume data for Bitcoin, covering the period from January 2012 to March 2021.
Methodology
- Data Cleaning and Transformation: The raw Bitcoin historical data underwent a series of essential cleaning and transformation steps to ensure its quality and usability for analysis. This involved loading the CSV file, promoting headers, and accurately changing initial data types for various numerical columns. Non-numeric or erroneous entries in the 'Open' column were filtered out, and the Unix timestamp was converted into a user-friendly 'Datetime' column, which was then split into separate 'Date' and 'Time' columns. Further transformations included removing the original 'Timestamp' column, filtering out specific datetime anomalies, and ensuring all financial columns ('Volume_BTC', 'Volume_Currency', 'Weighted_Price') were correctly typed as currency for precise calculations. The process concluded with renaming columns for clarity.

Key Findings & Insights
- Exponential Growth Trajectory: Bitcoin demonstrated an astounding growth trajectory from its humble beginnings in 2012. The price surged from a low of just $1.50 to an astonishing high of over $61,000 by early 2021, representing an astronomical increase that highlights its transformative impact on financial markets.
- Surging Trading Volumes: Accompanying the price appreciation was a massive increase in trading activity. Total trading volume in USD reached over $150 Billion, while Bitcoin volume exceeded 33 million BTC trades. This exponential growth in liquidity indicates increased market participation and institutional interest over the years.
- Distinct Market Cycles: The analysis clearly illustrates Bitcoin's characteristic market cycles, featuring periods of rapid bull runs (e.g., 2013, 2017, and late 2020/early 2021) followed by significant corrections. The dashboard visually captures these volatile swings, underscoring the high-risk, high-reward nature of the asset.
- Correlation of Price and Volume: The dashboard reveals a strong correlation between significant price movements and trading volumes. Peaks in volume often coincide with major price rallies or steep corrections, suggesting heightened market conviction or panic.
- Quarterly Volume Dynamics: Trading volume is not evenly distributed throughout the year. The pie chart for "Total Volume of trades by Quarter" identifies specific quarters (often Q4 and Q1 of the following year) that consistently exhibit higher trading activity, possibly driven by market momentum or year-end financial flows.
- Increasing Volatility at Higher Values: While Bitcoin was always volatile, the absolute price swings became much larger as its value increased. The "Highest and Lowest Bitcoin Prices by Year" chart vividly demonstrates this widening price range, making risk management increasingly crucial.
- Early Adoption & Mainstream Acceptance: The data from 2012-2021 reflects Bitcoin's journey from a niche digital experiment to a globally recognized asset, evident in the sustained increase in average weighted price and the growing number of trades (over 3.6 million within the period).
